Merry Men is beautifully illustrated, and amazingly accurate for the time period. The presentation and the realism of the plot is incredible.

I love that there are a full spectrum of characters present – trans, queer, gay, lesbian. There was a bit of a “free love” aspect that was disappointing/5.

Chute's first, and best known, novel, The Beans of Egypt, Maine, was published in and made into a film of the same name, directed by Jennifer Warren.

Despite the smallness of the place, the scope of "Merry Men" is sprawling. Like a Russian novel, it has a list of characters at the beginning, although, as Chute says, " only a few characters are central. The rest are walk-ons, like the people you see only to say `Hi' to in the P.O/5(7).

A dark, angry, swollen book, Merry Men gathers preacherly momentum as it charges toward a denouement of woes. Characters rail helplessly against crushing forces: "Big Biz" layoffs, union busters, rapists of the land, hunters who gleefully club wildcats and carelessly shoot housewives in their backyards and all those who work in white shirts with clean hands/5(7).

The Merry Men feels more like a good idea for a novel than it is a finished novella. As it stands, this three-chapter story of shipwrecks, madness and mystery seems to do everything by halves/5. Merry Men #1 book. Read 5 reviews from the world's largest community for readers.
